“Save the Date” is the first WordPress theme that I designed and mocked up in Photoshop, coded as a static HTML site, and then proceeded to transform into a WordPress theme. It was built on the Underscores starter theme by Automattic, the folks behind WordPress. In creating this WordPress theme I was pursuing a particular goal: producing a wedding website that represented brides of color.
I noticed that in so many of the wedding sites I saw there were very few people of color. In my theme the color palette and the choice of images throughout were all chosen to give brides of color (and anyone else) an idea of what a wedding website that “looked” like them might be like. I really enjoyed the process! Since this was my first time designing a WordPress theme, it was an intense challenge, but I also learned a lot and can’t wait to do it again.
In addition to designing and coding the theme, I also created the headers and header text with the bride and groom’s name and wedding date/location information. The typefaces used throughout the theme all come from type designer Laura Worthington’s “Adorn” Collection (they can be found at: http://lauraworthingtontype.com).
I designed this theme to be used in clients’ projects and customized with their own content, color palette, and images. Be sure to click on the image above or go to: milmondesign.com/wp_themes/savethedate/ to view the entire site I built featuring this theme.
